EGYPTIAN FAIENCE AMULET OF ISIS AND HORUS
Item Details
Description
Late to Ptolemaic Period, ca. 664-30 BC. A glazed composition amulet of Isis nursing her son, Horus, captures a timeless scene of maternal devotion. Crafted with meticulous artistry, this amulet depicts the goddess Isis seated regally on a throne, cradling her infant son on her lap. The amulet features intricate details, such as Isis's tripartite wig, and a crown which symbolized her divinity and royalty. The composition material, glazed to perfection, adds a lustrous and vibrant touch to the artwork. The flat back of the amulet, pierced transversely at the height of Isis's arms, suggests that it may have been used as a pendant or worn as a protective charm. Amulets of this type held great significance in ancient Egyptian society, believed to possess magical properties and provide protection to the wearer. Such amulets were highly sought after and were often buried with the deceased or placed in tombs as offerings to the gods. Isis, a prominent figure in Egyptian mythology, was revered as the goddess of motherhood, magic, and fertility. She was believed to be the wife of Osiris, the god of the afterlife, and the mother of Horus, the falcon-headed god associated with kingship and protection. Isis represented the ideal mother, embodying love, nurturing, and protection. The depiction of Isis nursing Horus in amulets like this one emphasized her role as a caring and nurturing deity, ensuring the well-being and continuity of the pharaoh and the Egyptian civilization as a whole.
