A pair of 9K gold lockets, each engraved M. A. Fillmore and 1855 on their covers and containing an anonymous from-life portrait of Fillmore, and copies of paintings of his first wife and daughter. One contains a close portrait of Millard Fillmore along with a braid of his hair. The other is a double locket containing from-life paintings of his wife, Abigail Powers Fillmore (d. 1853), and his daughter, Mary Abigail Fillmore (d. 1854), along with braided locks of their hair. Both female portraits are identified by their initials engraved on the bezel of the locket. Larger 1 ½" in diameter, smaller 1" in diameter.

Fillmore (1800-1874) was elected as Vice President in 1848 and ascended to the Presidency at the death of Zachary Taylor in 1850. A member of the Whig party and the last president of the United States not to be affiliated with either the Republican or Democratic parties, his years as chief executive were marked by his insistence upon enforcing the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850, which alienated many in the North and ultimately led to the destruction of the Whig Party.
