Description
Engraved by Freeman after the 1807 portrait by Gilbert Stuart (1755-1828,) and captioned: "This portrait of Captn. Isaac Hull, of the United States Navy, also the representation of the most interesting scene during the action between the United States frigate Constitution and His Britannic Majesty's frigate Guerriere, is most respectfully dedicated to the People of the United States, by their fellow citizens Freeman & Piere." Considered by most experts to be the first state. Mezzotint entirely and skillfully painted, likely gouache and watercolor. The vignette mentioned in the dedication appears below the portrait. Based on an original drawing by Capt. Hull, it shows the moment of the first American naval victory of the War of 1812. Frame is housed in a handsome c.1810 'twisted rope' frame gilded with 23-karat gold leaf. Frame, approx. 27 1/2" x 21 1/2". Sight, approx. 19 1/2" x 13 1/2".
