Description
A fine Old carved wooden headrest used by the nomadic Samburu or Rendille peoples of Eastern Africa. The headrest serves a protective function by elevating the head off the ground during sleep, thereby preventing attack by scorpions, though most often it is to protect the elaborate coiffure worn by the men. The Rendille lead a peaceful nomadic life in north central Kenya. They cling to a nomadic life of herding camels, goats and cattle. Provenance: Ex Robert Banks collection, MD.
