Description
JOHN TOOLE (IRELAND / VIRGINIA, 1815-1860), ATTRIBUTED, FOLK ART PORTRAIT OF A GIRL, oil on canvas, fine three-quarter-length depiction of an auburn-haired sitter wearing a white Empire-style gown accented with blue ribbons and blue beaded necklace, she holds a clutch of roses in her right hand, no signature located, retaining original yellow pine stretcher, which was removed and replaced during previous conservation and what are believed to be fragments of her original dress. Housed in a period molded giltwood frame. Circa 1835. 27 1/2" x 22 1/2" sight, 37" x 32" OA.
Catalogue Note: John Toole (1815-1860) was born in Dublin, Ireland but spent the majority of his life in Charlottesville, Virginia. He is known to have been painting professionally by 1832 and over his career executed a large number of portraits for Charlottesville, Albemarle Co., and other regional patrons. The University of Virginia holds Toile's papers, which contain detailed journal entries regarding his commissions.
According to a note included in Mr. Goodman's papers, the sitter of the present portrait is identified as "Addie Mann / daughter of John Powhatan Mann / Painted by her Uncle John Toole (who / married her mother's sister)."

Condition
Very good overall visual condition, lined with scattered moderate inpainting to figure and background. Frame with minor to moderate wear.
