Description
RARE VOGLER / PETERSEN, SALEM, NORTH CAROLINA WALNUT COFFEE MILL, the dovetailed box-style case fitted with a single dovetailed drawer retaining its original brass knob, topped with a brass hopper and iron shaft guide mounted to the case with iron brackets, and S-form handle stamped "T VOGLER" to top, with original turned walnut knob. Poplar secondary wood. All elements retain their original dry surface with outstanding patina. Metalwork by Timothy Vogler (1806-1896); cabinetwork attributed to the shop of Karsten Petersen (1776-1857). 1830-1840. 9" HOA, 5" H case, 5 1/4" SQ.

Catalogue Note: Timothy Vogler was a second-generation master gunsmith in Salem for over 50 years. The coffee mill in the Old Salem collection noted above, is Vogler's only other example of this form we could locate. It is currently on display in the Dianne H. Furr Moravian Decorative Arts Gallery at MESDA.
