Item Details
Description

JOHN FRANCIS MURPHY (AMERICAN, 1853-1921) LANDSCAPE, watercolor on paper, a Tonalist view in early fall, featuring deep green wetlands and a gray, overcast sky, signed and indistinctly dated lower left. Housed under glass in an old gilt frame. Late 19th/early 20th century. 7 3/4" x 11 5/8" sight, 16 1/2" x 20 1/2" OA.
Catalogue Note: Born in Oswego, New York, John Francis Murphy (1853-1921) was largely self-taught, though he may have studied for a period at the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts. A leading member of the Tonalist School, Murphy explored the emotional potential of the natural landscape, much like fellow artist George Inness (1825-1894), often creating atmospheric compositions that intimate certain moods.
