Description
A George IV ‘Gibson” type medicine spoon Charles Reily & George Storer, London 1828, of conventional form, hinged cover (Length: 13.5cm, weight: 2oz) Charles Gibson designed spoons with hinged lids in 1827. They assisted giving medicine to those unable to keep still or who had difficulty swallowing. There is a hinged cover over the bowl where the medicine was placed. The handle was often hollow and had a lip or small hole, when covered by a finger, this allowed a vacuum to hold the medicine and when in place in the patient's mouth, the finger could be moved to allow the medicine to go down the throat. Examples are seen in various museums etc. In pewter but unusual in silver
