Description
CHOU PEI CHUN HUÃ; Late 19th century.
"Funeral procession".
Ink and colour on silk.
Signed.
Size: 32 x 62 cm; 34 x 64,5 cm (frame).
The author of this canvas presents us a costumbrist scene endowed, nevertheless, with a deep tragic feeling. The author of this work presents us with a genre scene which is nevertheless endowed with a deep sense of tragedy.
The scene is conceived from an aerial and fluid perspective. It is an open, asymmetrical composition, centred in the foreground and suggesting the depth of the landscape through simple but effective details. n this sense, the work connects with the artistic world represented by ukiyo-e: expressive and marked line, descriptive and anecdotal character, eloquent and expressive use of empty space and colours applied in large planes. The ukiyo-e genre refers to the bourgeois culture that emerged in the urban centres of Edo (now Tokyo), Osaka and Kyoto during the Edo period, whose art is characterised by the depiction of bourgeois and court scenes alongside simple architectures, whose figures have been delimited by a highly defined outline.
