Description
Japanese Celadon Tea Bowl: Suwa Sozan I, probably dating to late 19th-early 20th century, is the work of one of Japan's Imperial Household Artists. Suwa Sozan I (Japanese 1851-1922) moved to Kyoto around 1900 and continued to work there until his death in 1922. This tea bowl, with molded and incised dragon motif, is distinguished by the celadon glaze for which he was famous. The base bears his seal. The tomobako is inscribed: "Sozan Saku (Sozan made); Seiji Celadon (Celadon Cup). The shop's name, Kisen-do is also in the tomobako.
