Description: Bothwell Castle, Lanarkshire, Scotland by John Laporte (British 1761-1839), signed lower corner oil painting on canvas, framed canvas: 16 x 26cm (6¼ x 10 in.) provenance: private collection, UK Fine antique Scottish oil painting, depicting figures before a sunset at Bothwell Castle. The work has a golden, romantic light to it showing influence from Grand Tour works of the same period, and influence from the Italian painters of that era. The painting is by the British artist, John Laporte (1761-1839), who spent much time painting views of Italy, which no doubt bore much influence on his style of painting. Laporte trained as an artist in London under John Melchior Barralet and became an accomplished topographical artist working in watercolour and oils. He exhibited at the Royal Academy and elsewhere from 1785. Laporte drew a number of Italian views in the 1820s and 1830s.
