19th century. An original R .Mitford (English, 1781-1870) hand-colored engraving of a Curlew. Marked Plate XIII from the “Illustrations of British Ornithology", London. British etcher and engraver and the brother-in-law of Prideaux John Selby (1788 - 1867), a noted etcher and engraver. Mitford was taught to etch and engrave by Thomas Bewick in Newcastle and Mitford passed on what he learned to Selby. This piece is unframed; measures 25 x 20 inches. Overall good condition. Light wear to the edges and toning; small graphite marks.
