Description
England, early 19th century. An exceptional engraving after Robert James Thorton (1768-1837); a famed English physician and botanical writer. Multiple methods were used to create this intaglio print such as mezzotint, aquatint, line/stipple engraving, and finished with watercolor. Represented here is a Tankersville's Limodorum, a species of purple orchid. It came from the fourth series of Thorton's notable "Temple of Flora." The blue, stormy background emanates romantic tones as the flower appears suspended among the clouds. Measures 10 x 13 inches. Overall good condition; trimmed down from original size. Toning present around the plate from resting within a mat for some time.
