Description
Signed E Othon Friesz .LES BAIGNEUSES À LA PLAGE. circa 1907 Gouache and oil on Paper Painting
Signed E Othon Friesz Gouache and oil mon Paper Painting, Attributed to Achille-Emile Othon Friesz. In Paris, Friesz met Henri Matisse, Albert Marquet, and Georges Rouault. Like them, he rebelled against the academic teaching of Bonnat and became a member of the Fauves, exhibiting with them in 1907. It was in the summer of 1907, while traveling near La Ciotat, that Othon Friesz, accompanied by Braque, met Matisse and finally fully immersed himself in Fauvism, the first avant-garde movement of the 20th century. Indeed, a year earlier in Antwerp, Friesz had timidly made a turn towards Fauvism without completely detaching himself from naturalism or Impressionism, while a group of artists emancipated color from the primacy of drawing. "Othon Friesz employed a broad drawing and wide arabesques whose dynamism was accentuated by a clear palette of yellows, pinks and whites. The curved line traces the silhouette ..that the artist himself describes as impulsive"
