Item Details
Description
West Africa, southern Nigeria, Benin Kingdom, Edo peoples, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. A cast brass sculpture of a standing figure, likely an Oba (king), holding a ceremonial sword and trident shaped headdress. Benin bronzes (which are actually made from variety of bronzes and brass), were created from at least the 16th century onwards in the West African Kingdom of Benin, and most pieces were commissioned specifically for the ancestral altars of past Obas and Queen Mothers. They were also used in other rituals to honor the ancestors and to validate the accession of a new Oba. Size: 3" W x 13.75" H (7.6 cm x 34.9 cm); 15.75" H (40 cm) on included custom stand.
