Description

Southeast Asia, Burma (Myanmar), ca. late 18th to 19th century CE. A lovely gilt and lacquered wood Shakyamuni Buddha seated in the full lotus position, with hands in the Bhumisparsa (or Bhumisparsha) mudra, or "earth witness" mudra. This mudra represents the moment of his awakening, as Buddha defeated the demon Mara, and claimed the earth as his witness to his enlightenment. An impressive example of Buddhist visual culture, replete with immense artistry and numerous layers of meaning. This piece has great signs of age and exposure to the elements which add a nice aged and weathered energy to the tranquil Buddha, but retains some of the gold gilt. His countenance bears serene, downcast eyes beneath heavy lids and sweeping brows, a slender mouth above a rounded chin, and elongated ear lobes signifying his renunciation of materialistic wealth. Size: 6.75" L x 3.5" W x 17" H (17.1 cm x 8.9 cm x 43.2 cm); 19.75" H (50.2 cm) on included custom stand; gold quality: 28.8%
