A Dutch William & Mary walnut marquetry stand, box, and dressing mirror 18th / 19th century

The stand with two drawers and X-form stretcher; the dressing mirror with slant-front surface revealing fitted interior, lopers, and lower drawer, on bun feet; each decorated with intricate marquetry depicting urns, flowers, birds, and / or butterflies.

Property formerly in the collection of Christine O. Groves Burton (1893-1973), Baltimore, Maryland
Thence by descent to the present consignor.



Note

The majority of the items from this collection were acquired or ordered by Christine O. Groves (Burton) to furnish her home, built 1922, a Colonial Revival stucco mansion located at 225 Northway, Baltimore, Maryland. The house still stands.

Condition
stand: evidence that it once had a lift-lid top, with hinge holes to backside filled, originally had brass pulls on the sides, with holes evident to interior sides, likely later fitted with drawers, the runners are later, overall having a nice polished surface, the inlay with some occasional losses and cracks commensurate with age and use, the feet with a few mends and showing some minor old worm holes, the stretcher with some age splits, having reinforcement segments to underside, the drawer interiors varnished; box: the inlay with some losses commensurate with age, the veneer with areas of loss, puckering, and bowing to veneer, with some noticeable losses to molded edge along sides and lid, some occasional darkened spots of fill to front and back, later lined to interior with purple textured paper; dressing mirror: nice overall, with some occasional / expected losses to inlay and veneer commensurate with age, an area of loss to scalloped molding along base edge on left-facing side corner, and a mended break on the opposing corner, some occasional veneer patches evident, the brass escutcheon on the lowest drawer is detached but present
