Description
Fine ca. 1845 Philadelphia, two-part secretary/bookcase, with excellent book-matched crotch mahogany veneers. The top section with a carved crest over two fabric lined glass doors, lower section with a drop down front drawer that reveals a desk interior, over two panel doors on a carved bracket base. Secondary woods are cedar, cherry, poplar, and white pine. 81.5”H x 50.5”W x 19”D. Provenance: Original furnishing of 'Winterham', Amelia County, Virginia, built in 1848 by John Garland Jefferson II (1812-1873). He married Otelia Mansfield Howlett in 1842. Jefferson lived at Winterham until his death. The secretary remained in the family until 1991-1992. Provenance: Wendell & Betsy Garret collection, purchased from Sumpter Priddy III, Inc. .
