Notes:
In addition to making baskets, Stephen Gibbs (1896-1974) was a woodworker, builder and innkeeper. He is said to be mostly self-taught, but when he was a small boy his mother often had him bring supper to noted basketmaker Mitchy Ray, an island character and confirmed bachelor who was looked after by his neighbors. Gibbs wove baskets from 1954 until his death, and his work is known for its superior quality.
