Description
Included here are three wood carved bowls ("kava") believed to have originated in either Tonga or Samoa. The largest of the three measures 17" in diameter and 6 3/4" high and is in fine condition given its age and manufacture. The two smaller bowls do suffer from some defects. The braided rope handle (with seashell adornment) was apparently never completed by the original artisan for one end is loosed and a single shell (included) has yet to be incorporated into the work. The 14-legged piece is missing a single support, broken off long ago and missing. There is also some significant adhesive remnants on the bottom of the bowl portion (evidently from packing tape). Also included, a mancala board originating in West Africa. In fine shape. Playing pieces are not included. From the collection of a world traveler of 45+ years who has circumnavigated the globe via sailboat. Keywords: South Pacific, Oceania, Tonganese, Samoan, culture, serving
