Item Details
Description
Group of 10 items from famed photographer Alfred Cheney Johnston's estate. Two copies of Johnston's spiral bound compilation "Enchanting Beauty" (1937, Swan Publications, Inc.) in their original cardboard housings. The first copy is in fine condition, with its cardboard box exhibiting some staining and tearing at its corners. The second copy is in only fair condition, exhibiting toning, foxing and staining on the book itself and its cardboard box (which is deteriorating structurally as well). One copy of the spiralbound compilation "US Camera 1935" (William Morrow & Company) featuring two works by Johnston. In poor condition. The front cover is separating from the binding and foxing and toning is evident throughout. Most notably there appears to be some water damage to the back portion of the publication which results in quite a few pages being stuck together. This is isolated to the advertising section that follows the photographic reproductions however. Largest shipping item measuring approximately 9 3/4" wide, 11 3/4" high and 1 1/4" deep. One copy of "The Camera: The Photographic Journal of America" June 1935 issue, with Johnston's work gracing the cover and throughout the magazine itself. In poor condition. The cover wrap has separated from the original binding and the interior has been stapled at some point to keep the structure intact. One "Calendar of Events in the Library of Congress, January 1973" mailer detailing an exhibition of Johnston's work. In fine condition. One memorial card and one greeting card from Ralph E. Hull Funeral Home in remembrance of Johnston's passing in 1971. The greeting card contains a film transparency of the bouquet of flowers the recipient sent to the service. The tape holding the transparency in place is missing so it is now loose within the folds of the card. Two canes, one measuring 33 3/4" high with an irregular octagonal 17k gold (XRF tested to confirm) handle stamped on four sides with floral decorations. There are dents throughout the handle (a sizable one at the very top) and a single fissure where the cap is mounted to the shaft. The other cane, measuring 35 1/2" high is more oval shaped than round and tapers down to its ferrule. The bone handle is imprinted with the initials ACJ in a distinctive manner. Both canes exhibit dings and scuffs in their wooden shafts but are in overall fine condition. One gold plated silver money clip monogrammed with the initials ACJ (in the same style as above) and one gold plated brass tie pin with a simple geometric design. A riveted metal tin wastebasket from Johnston's studio measuring approximately 11" square and 15 1/2" high.
