Description
Edo period Samurai JingasaAt auction are two Edo period (1600/1868) Japanese Samurai Jingasa headgear. Both hats are made of wood & other mixed material's incorporating the ancient Asian swastika denoting the family kamon (Mon) known as "Manji". There were varying shapes of this design used by different clans, some of whom were quite reknown in Japanese history. Each jingasa measure 16" across. Both are from the same clan. The red textured lacquer example depicts a gold lacquered sun accompanied by three swastika (manji) family crests. The underside is also of red lacquer and is complete with it's white padded cotton head cushion and strapping. The second jingasa is made of built up lacquer the color of russet iron and made to look like rivited individual iron plates giving the impression that it is a piece or armor. The dome piece is made from gilded copper. The very frail cord decoration remains partially intact and suspends from a gilded copper ring. The bottom side is red lacquer with an encircled gold swastika rendered in gold lacquer. The center is black and maker signed in red lacquer. This example has no head pad or straps. Both hats are in very good condition with some very minor lacquer losses & light chips.
