Set of Four Chinese Bent Bamboo and Rattan Armchairs, 20th c., the arched canted high back with a central gilt and black lacquer curved splat with landscape and figural decoration, to curved arms over a trapezoidal seat, on bamboo legs joined by bent bamboo stretchers, H.- 49 1/2 in., W.- 24 in., D.- 24 in. In overall good condition. Lacquer work and caning on seats are intact. A few segments of the weave on one seat are slightly bent, but otherwise intact and structurally sound. On one chair, there is a loss to one strand of the binding at the arm, and to the binding on the leg of another chair. One chair stretcher has been repaired. There is wood filler repair to a shrinkage crack to the front of one chair stile; another chair has a shrinkage crack to the back of one of its stiles. Another chair has been rebound at the stiles and arms with a near matching dark brown strapping, but it is not black like the others. One of these rebound arms is still slightly loose. Condition is as to be expected with age, material and use.
