Description
Amazing antique woodcut by Hans Brosamer is an exquisite piece of history, originating from reformist theologian Martin Luther's "Hauspostille" (house postils) published in Nuremberg in c.1550. The term "postil" originally referred to a collection of sermons or a book of sermons intended for personal instruction and, under certain circumstances, for reading aloud in church. It also aimed to assist pastors in preparing their own sermons. Literally, postils were explanations of Bible texts that followed the words of the text. This protestant bestseller, Martin Luther's Hauspostille, printed several times in Nuremberg by Johann vom Berg and Ulrich Neuber, the study examines the sources, location, and function of anticlerical motifs in Protestant literature. Size: 5.5” x 4” inches / 14 cm x 10 cm. Technique: Woodcut. Date: c. 1550. Artist: Hans Brosamer. Place: Nuremberg, Germany
