Dimensions: 6.5" x 8" (image), 11" x 14" (sheet). Block Island was a favorite escape for Rhode Islanders as well as photographer Carmel Vitullo. The natural beauty enchanted her year after year particularly in the 1960’s before it became a known tourist haven. As a result, she captured the remote farming and fishing cycles of the residents. In 2009, the Block Island Historical Society organized a solo exhibition of Vitullo’s Block Island images and purchased several of these photographs for their permanent collection. Renowned photographer Carmel Vitullo returned to Providence to work as a professional photographer in the 1950’s. She joined the Providence Journal newspaper as a freelance photographer and was celebrated among her Providence colleagues after being selected for Steichen’s MoMA, Family of Man Exhibition. Vitullo's photographs are in the Museum of Modern Art in NYC, RISD Museum of Art, the Newport Museum as well as numerous other museums.
