Four Confederate Bank Notes with Slave and Cotton Imagery

A group of four Confederate currency notes featuring slave and cotton imagery. All measuring 7" x 3" and printed by the states of Alabama and Georgia, dated ca. 1860s. The two Georgia notes are $1.00 Georgia Bank of Commerce bills. One is Series B, No. 652, while the other is Series C, with no legible number. These notes depict a slave carrying cotton as well as a large merchant ship. The two Alabama notes are $10.00 Central Bank of Alabama bills, with one Series B, [no number], and one Series B, No. 5208. These notes depict slaves carrying cotton, large plantation fields, and a portrait of George Washington. Varying degrees of wear, folds and creasing, soiling, etc. Heavy toning and fragile paper. Just prior to the outbreak of the Civil War, the newly formed Confederacy started issuing their own currency. The paper money was not backed by gold, but bearers were promised to be repaid after the war, with the government banking on a Southern victory. Production was in no way uniform, and individual states and even cities issued their own money as well. As the war progressed, Confederate currency became practically worthless, with only a series of 1862 notes from Mississippi being of value because they were backed by stored cotton. Although they became worthless at the time, Confederate currency is now highly collectible due to the wide variety of banks and states that issued them.
