Description

1861 Receipt for Servant Clothing, 1st Maryland Cavalry

MDS, 1p, measuring 5" x 8", dated November 5, 1861, [Maryland]. Lieutenant John M. Annan of the 1st Maryland Calvary Battalion, Potomac Home Brigade purchases "1 pr Drawers for Servant" at $.75, as well as a pair of blankets for $3.50. Docketing below in pencil indicates an additional charge for one shirt, totaling $5.00 in all. Features darkened soiling along bottom edge, with expected creasing and light ink smudging throughout. Very good overall.

The 1st Maryland Cavalry Battalion, Potomac Home Brigade, would consist of four companies (A, B, C, and D) with the initial enlistment period occurring between August and November 1861. Lieutenant Annan was recruited to Company C, commanded by Captain John Horner, but would be accidentally shot and mortally wounded less than ten days after this record was created on November 13, 1861. This would mark the first causality of Captain Horner's company, which he continued to command until his resignation in mid-1862.
