Butterfly McQueen Signed "Prissy" Photo, Gone With the Wind
A black and white signed photograph of a smiling Butterfly McQueen, best known as "Prissy" from "Gone With the Wind". Measuring 8" x 10", n.p., n.d. A signed and inscribed black and white glossy photo of McQueen in her "Prissy" costume. Signed at the right side, "Butterfly McQueen as 'Prissy' of 'G.W.T.W.'" in black felt tip. With an additional inscription and signature on verso, reading "Dear fan, Thanks for Sase! B.McQ." [SASE = Self Addressed Stamped Envelope]. Near fine, with bold signatures on the front and back.
Thelma "Butterfly" McQueen (1911–1995) was originally a dancer but appeared in her first film in 1939 as Prissy, Scarlett O'Hara's maid, in "Gone with the Wind". Despite her new fame, she was disallowed from attending the film's premiere because it was held at a "Whites-Only" theater. Following her film debut, McQueen was often type-cast as a maid - something she would eventually come to resent. She did eventually win a Daytime Emmy Award in 1979 for her performance in the "Seven Wishes of a Rich Kid" episode of the ABC Afterschool Special.
