Civil Rights Activist James Meredith Signed "Mississippi" Pamphlet

A signed pamphlet on Mississippi by Civil Rights activist James H. Meredith. 12pp, measuring 5.5" x 8.5", Jackson, Mississippi, dated 1995. First edition, published by Meredith Publishers. Entitled "Mississippi: A Volume of Ten Books" and is signed on the intro page: "To: Danny Rentz My greatest moment James H. Meredith." The pamphlet is a prospectus for a collected edition of ten titles written and published by Meredith, outlining the history of Mississippi from 1540 to 1994. Includes James Meredith vs Ole Miss; The Father of White Supremacy [Meredith's white great-grandfather]; Letters to My Unborn Grandchildren; History of Attala County; Mississippi; and six others. The pamphlet also states the prices for individual books and the whole group, with the ten-book collection listed at $130 for purchase. With flattened folds and faint edge toning and soiling. Boldly signed by Meredith.

James H. Meredith (b. 1933) became the first African-American student admitted to the racially segregated University of Mississippi in 1962, following the intervention of the federal government. His admission was a huge milestone in the history of civil rights in the U.S. but also ignited the Ole Miss riot of 1962. He graduated in 1963 with a degree in political science and went on to earn his law degree at Columbia University. He continued his political activism after graduation and led a March Against Fear in 1966 from Memphis, TN to Jackson, MS. On the second day of the march, despite police protection, Meredith was shot and wounded by a white man named Aubrey James Norvell. Meredith luckily recovered and rejoined the march on June 26 before it reached Jackson. He would go on to work in politics and served as an adviser on Senator Jesse Helms' staff.
