DESCRIPTION; James Robinette of Adams or Cumberland County, PA. Seated on Baltimore style chair wear a black cravat, white shirt & dark jacket. Attributed to John James Trumbell Arnold. John Arnold was an itinerant portrait artist who painted the likeness of people who lived in York Springs area in the 1840s. He was born in Latimer Township, York County, the son of Dr. John B. Arnold & his wife, the former Rachel Weakley. Attributed because he never signed his artwork. Other Robinette family included in lots 100, 113 & 114. PROVENANCE: The Robinette family have retained ownership of this portrait of James Robinette, with exception of an exhibition at Cumberland Count Historical Society in which this portrait was displayed. James Robinette was a relation of Susan Gardner Robinette, the creator of the quilts also included in this auction. MEASUREMENT: 30" high x 24-1/2" wide; frame 2-1/2" wide. CONDITION: Housed in later frames and restretched. Painting has substantial damage including canvas penetrations. MEG
