Description
**First Time At Auction**
Northern Europe, England, late Medieval to early Renaissance period, ca. 15th to 16th century CE. A lovely and quite rare hand-carved wooden figure from an "angel roof" - an English architectural phenomenon of roof interiors adorned with intricately-carved wooden angels that occurred between 1395 and the English Reformation of the mid-1500s. Boasting liberal remains of red and blue pigment, the figure issues from undulating folds of fabric, wearing a tunic with prominent lapels and a flowing skirt. A wavy coiffure crowns her elegant visage, which has minimalist features as few viewers would have been able to see her facial details when she was placed aloft on a hammerbeam. Note the indentation in her back where she previously attached to a supporting beam. Since almost 90% of religious imagery from England’s Middle Ages was destroyed during the Reformation, roof angels, like this example, comprise the largest extant body of medieval wood carvings in England. Size: 4.6" W x 13" H (11.7 cm x 33 cm); 13.75" H (34.9 cm) on included custom stand.
Provenance: ex-private Pasadena, California, USA collection
