Europe, Iberian Peninsula, Spain circa 1490-1500. Exceptional Spanish ring guard sword with very rare double closed ring crossguard, leather ribbed grip, and squared pommel with rosette carved to the center, the blade double edged very wide at the ricasso with a pronounced raised central ridge, the blade tappers to a sharp point and was intended for cutting and thrusting, perhaps the rarest being the blade is etched with Papal vestiges of the Pope and inscriptions referencing Hannibal above the Carthaginian general engraving and identifying information indicating the bladesmiths workshop of Fredrich?. Condition: wear commensurate with age and condition the ring to one guard delaminated and slightly separated. Provenance: New York Arms and Armour Collection
