MASSACHUSETTS: BOSTON SCENES. SMITH, JOHN RUBENS. 1775-1849. Old Boston. Boston: Smith, Knight & Tappan, 1857-1858. 5 chromolithographic prints of Boston scenes, prepared by J.H. Bufford from drawings by J.R. Smith done in 1811-1812. The scenes include Beacon Hill, From the Present Site of the Reservoir Between Hancock & Temple Sts., Beacon Hill from Derne St., Beacon Hill From Mt. Vernon St., Beacon Hill With Mr. Thurston's House, From Bowdoin St., and Beacon Hill, From Mt. Vernon St., Near the Head of Hancock St.. Images approximately 255 x 355 mm each, sheet size 355 x 455 mm. All showing slight browning, the last title with spotting across most of the surface. John Rubens Smith made the original drawings from which these lithographs were taken, while working as a teacher in Boston. They record the removal of the peak of Beacon Hill with its eagle-topped beacon pole monument, which now resides behind the Massachusetts State House. Lot to be sold without reserve.
