Description
  • Title: Antique Print - Tribute - Spanish Conquistadors - Latin America - 18th Century
  • Description: This wonderful engraving "Venient annis sæcula seris, Quibus Oceanus vincula rerum/Laxet et ingens pateat tellus, Tethysque novos detegat Crbar" (There will come an age in future years when the ocean will loosen the bonds of things/Vast land will be revealed, and Tethys will disclose new barriers) originates from "ll Gazzettiere americano contenente un distinto ragguaglio di tutte le parti del Nuovo Mondo della loro situazione, clima, terreno, prodotti, stato antico e moderno, merci..." ("The American Gazetteer containing a distinct account of all parts of the New World their situation, climate, terrain, produce, ancient and modern state, commodities..."), Italian edition published in Livorno by Marco Coltellini, 1763. The work included prints of America's native mammals and birds, as well as scenes of building and manufacture, commerce (of indigo, tobacco, sugar), birds eye views of towns and city plans of the Americas and Colonies. The engraving depicts the tribute of indigenous people (indians) to the conquistadors. It portrays the historical practice where Spanish conquerors (conquistadors) required the local indigenous populations to pay taxes or other forms of tribute as a sign of acknowledging the conquerors' authority. The tribute could include various resources, goods, or labor that the indigenous population was obliged to provide to the conquistadors. The engraving likely illustrates a scene of this transaction or tribute-giving event involving the indigenous communities in Latin America during the period of Spanish colonization. Title set is under the composition. In the bottom right corner, the name of the author. The reverse side is blank. This engraving is printed on laid paper with wide margins. This is an original print, not a modern reproduction. Many more antique drawings and prints on dahlstromsfineart.
