Item Details
Description
Rakusan Tsuchiya (1896-1976) Japanese woodblock print titled omurozakura ni ore suzume (seishun) Omuro Cherry and Flock of Tree Sparrows (Mid Spring)Mat Sight measures 13 inches wide by 18 1/2 and the glass covered frame measures 21 inches by 26 inches long Rakusan Tsuchiya was a Painter, Woodblock Print Artist, and Printer. During the over four years between early 1929 and mid 1933 Rakusan produced a series of one hundred large woodblock prints at the rate of two new designs a month. Each of the designs includes one or more birds, and most also have botanical elements. Rakusan called his series, Rakuzan Kachou Gafu, Rakusan's Flower and Bird Print Series; but for convenience it is usually called here the 100 Series.Rakusan had initially intended to produce only a single print run of about two hundred copies of each of the designs. However, he begain reprinting additional print runs of identical copies of selected designs almost immediately. For the majority of the designs reprintings in up to three editions were eventually produced by the time Rakusan closed his studio in 1955. All illustrations in this overview gallery (and on its sub pages) are of edition I copies unless indicated otherwise. This woodblock print was produced from an original painting on silk dating from the late 1920s whose current location is unknown. The indentification of this design as number 3 is original to Rakusan who published the print as the 3rd design in his series of one hundred woodblock prints called, Rakuzan Kachou Gafu, lit. Rakusan's Flower and Bird Print Series'.3 is one of only a few designs in this series which include any man made objects. The upper background is of gold ink applied in a pattern clearly meant to represent squares of gold leaf applied to a Japanese screen.
