Two Books Signed By Confederate Figures. (1) Edmund Ruffin (1794-1865) financial supporter of the South who claimed to have shot the first shot at Fort Sumter. Iliad of Homer; Translated by Alexander Pope Vol. 1; 1771. Signed by Edmund Ruffin on the inside front board and dated 1776 on a library label, stating that he bought the book from a John C. Littlepage. (1) Signed Lucy Pickens, The Knout and The Russians; or, The Muscovite Empire, The Czar, and His People; By. Germain De Lagny; Harper & Brother, Publishers; 1854. Pickens (1832-1899) was known as the "Queen of the Confederacy," helping shape the image of the "Southern belle." Lucy married Colonel Francis Wilkinson Pickens in 1858. He served as the United States ambassador to Russia until 1860. They returned home and he was elected as the governor of South Carolina days before it seceded from the Union. Lucy would be the only woman ever featured on Confederate currency (three issues of $100, $1, and $1,000 CSA loan certificate). The Larry Mangus Collection, Corinth, Mississippi.
