Description
**First Time At Auction**
Native American, Western United States, Montana region, Blackfoot, ca. mid-19th century CE. A well-preserved steel knife with a rectangular wood handle, a painted rawhide sheath with copper tacks, and cut out handle / cord that enabled suspension on a belt. The painted rawhide is purportedly from a yearling bison, the red pigment and copper rivets are characteristic of early trade with Europeans. Size in sheath: 12.75" L x 3" W (32.4 cm x 7.6 cm); knife: 12" L x 1.125" W (30.5 cm x 2.9 cm)
Provenance: private Don Phelps collection, owner Todos Santos Trading Post, Alamo, California, USA, before 2000

Condition
Wear and creasing to hide with losses and fading to red pigment. Wear to steel blade and wood handle, but intact and blade is sharp.
