Description
Western Asiatic/Aegan, ca. 1200-700 BC.A bronze sword with a long, gracefully tapering blade and a broad, middle ridge, contributing both structural integrity and aesthetic appeal to the weapon. A testament to the skill of ancient artisans, the blade and hilt merge through a casting technique, demonstrating their mastery of metalworking. The short hilt finishes with an eared pommel, distinguished by its crescent shape. Serving as a counterbalance to the blade, this design element enhances the weapon's overall balance and facilitates agile maneuverability during combat. Bronze weapons held immense significance in the societies of the Bronze Age, revolutionizing warfare, hunting, and cultural practices. The adoption of bronze as the primary material for weaponry represented a monumental technological advancement. Compared to earlier materials like stone or copper, bronze offered superior strength, durability, and cutting capabilities, fundamentally transforming the capabilities of warriors and hunters alike. Size: L:785mm / W:50mm ; 1.21kg Provenance: Private collection of a West London gentleman; previously in a collection formed on the UK/International art market in the 1980s.
