Description
Venus; Valdivia Culture; Ecuador, 2500-2000 BC.
Terracotta.
Size: 5 x 4,5 x 1,5 cm.
The Valdivia is one of the oldest cultures in America, and has its origins in the earlier Las Vegas culture. It developed between 3500 and 1800 BC in one of the most arid areas of southern Ecuador, mainly on the Santa Elena peninsula, although settlements of this culture have also been found in the interior. Only one river provides water and vegetated areas, the Humboldt, but its cold current nevertheless gives rise to a rich aquatic flora and fauna, with a wide variety of algae, fish and molluscs. The Valdivia culture stands out for being one of the first American societies in which the use of pottery became widespread.
