Description
James Earl Ray Escape Trial Courtroom Drawing - This is an original drawing completed for CBS News during the 1977 trial for James Earl Ray's attempt to escape from prison. James Earl Ray was convicted in 1969 for the 1968 assassination of Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. at the Lorraine Hotel in Memphis, Tennessee. He escaped the Brushy Mountain State Penitentiary, along with six other prisoners, on June 10, 1977, but was recaptured three days later. This dramatic courtroom drawing was completed by Anna Sandhu (signature in the lower left corner), who eventually went on to marry the convicted assassin of one of the most beloved Civil Rights leaders in American history. This lot measures approximately 22.75 in x 26.75 in.
