Description
A one sheet film poster for Tobe Hooper's The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (Bryanston Pictures, 1974) signed by Hooper, Gunnar Hansen (who has inscribed his character name, "Leatherface"), Marilyn Burns ('Sally'), Teri McMinn (who has also doodled a heart with an arrow through it and written "To Kirk, xoxo, "Pam"), William Vail ("Kirk"), Allen Danziger ('Jerry'), Edwin Neal (who has inscribed his character's name, "Hitchhiker," and famous line, "...you like head cheese??..."), John Dugan ("Grandpa"), and Ed Guinn ("Truck Driver").
This poster is from the film's original 1974 release by Bryanston Pictures. New Line Cinema re-released the film several times, beginning in 1980.
The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, about five teenagers who find themselves in the clutches of an insane, murderous family while driving through rural Texas, remains one of the most disturbing films ever made. The film had a notoriously grueling shoot in the Texas heat. Although Tobe Hooper purposefully avoided including graphic gore, intending to secure a PG-rating, the film was rated R anyway because it evoked gore so effectively and was, in general, very disturbing and intense. With a budget of less than $140,000, the film grossed over $30 million domestically, roughly the equivalent of $150.8 million circa 2019. The film and its main villain, Leatherface (Hansen), remain iconic.
