Description
Empire State model camera by Rochester Optical Cowas designed for use with dry plates (this is the original glass plate coated with a gelatin emulsion of silver bromide) and possesses a slider box ( via a brass knob) on base with solid brass hardware ( all original), a cherry stain, and black fabric bellows. Measures 19 in. H x 18 in. L x 17.25 in. W . Signed plate on piece reads Improved Empire State Manufactured by Rochester Optical Co. Rochester , NYThe glass plate at the back of the camera is reversible (and removable) as well as having a small brass lever to slightly open the frame in order to accommodate sliding in a dry plate holder. This frame is designed so that it tilts, and can be placed for a horizontal landscape photo or vertical portrait. The Empire State model was patented by Rochester Optical on August 31, 1886, and was intended as a more accessible, and less expensive version, than, the Ideal model by Rochester Optical.
