Provenance: Cotton 1850's rose of sharon quilt, all hand pieced, hand appliqued and hand quilted, with hand embroidered accents and unusual small compasses in the background. The hand quilting is superb, with quilting around and within the design and in close straight line, feathered, clam shell, and curlicue designs in the background, all at 7-8 stitches to the inch. The back is white, the hand stitched binding is an early green and very early Prussion blue fabric, and the batting is thin. You can see cotton seed residue inside when you hold the quilt up to the light. Provenance included with the quilt identifies the family that owned the quilt, and that it came out of Hopedale, Ohio.
