Six Framed Needlework Samplers, America or England, 19th century. Group includes unsigned square with rows of needlepoint stitches in red; one square inscribed with hymn 'While thus we mourn way we rejoice / And as thy cross we see / May each exclaim in faith and hope / The Saviour died for me' in brown above symmetrical composition of potted flowers and birds flanking a large house, signed Charlotte Hodson, 1840; one cross-stitched alphabet signed Mary Thomson, 1889, and another signed Tirzah Porter, 1834; a portrait-oriented sampler of three alphabets and numbers divided by lines of verse 'Learning is / the ornament of youth and / comfort of age' and 'Let Virtue Be / A Guide to Thee', signed Susan A. Mumford; and one sampler on double-weave canvas worked in red yarn with alphabets and numbers above a male figure, signed Madeline Keller, in unglazed frame, largest sight, 20cm wide, 25cm high (8 1/2in wide, 10 3/8in high).
