Rare Early 19th Century 20 Star U.S. Navy Commissioning Pennant, America, c. 1818-19. Hand-stitched wool bunting, twenty applique cotton stars on a blue field, followed by a long white over red fly, the hoist composed of linen canvas covering a wood dowel, mounted in a black-painted frame, pennant, approx. 32 ft.; frame, ht. 68 1/2, wd. 70 3/4 in. Footnotes: Provenance Jeff R. Bridgman Antiques, Inc., York, Pennsylvania. Note The pennant with twenty stars reflects the official number of stars required to be counted on the United States flag per the Flag Act of 1818.
