Description
Published by C. Essex & Co., London, 1829. "Of the Mall in St. James Park". Accordion-style paper peepshow of the Mall. Five cut-out panels, 1 peep-hole, hand-colored aquatint in a slipcase. 10.5 cm x 13.2 cm., expanding to approximately 62 cm.Henry VIII named it St. James's Park when it was a wet field. It was planted by Charles II in 1668 when the game of Mall was then played by the Nobility. Improved by George III in 1775 and greatly beautified by his present Majesty. 1829. An example of this paper peepshow is in the collection of the National Art Library of the Victoria & Albert Museum.
Condition
Worn slipcase. Reinforced upper and lower margins to front and back covers. Some discoloration and staining to accordion paper. Hand-colored aquatint panels in overall good condition.
