Figure sitting in a chair reading the paper. Cup of coffee at their feet. Joseph Hirsch has achieved a brilliant career in art. Born in Philadelphia in 1910, in 1927 he was awarded by the City of Philadelphia its four-year scholarship for study at the Pennsylvania Museum School of Art. He graduated from there with two first prizes, later studied with George Luks, and received a Wooley Fellowship for travel abroad. In 1934 he was awarded the Walter Lippincott Prize at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts for the best figure painting in oil by an American citizen; the same year the National Academy gave him its Third Hallgarten prize. Soon afterwards he received First Honorable Mention in the Prix de Rome Exhibition, and in 1942 and 1943 awards from the Art Institute of Chicago.
