Item Details
Description
Ancient Greece, Corinth, ca. 7th to 6th century BCE. A wheel-thrown pottery aryballos of a near-miniature form with a delightfully spherical body, a round but stable base, a squat neck, a discoid rim with an overhanging lip, and a strap handle joining rim to shoulder. The cream-hued exterior provides an elegant ground atop which black-painted linear motifs are presented. Most notable is the repeated motif of a hoplite, shield raised, standing ready for battle, wrapped in an infinite line around the body. The neck is encircled with a radiating band of tongues and the rim with concentric circles. Size: 2.3" Diameter x 2.4" H (5.8 cm x 6.1 cm)
