Toyohara Chikanobu, Japanese, 1838 to 1912, an original antique woodblock print on paper, First Poem Making, from the series, The Outer Palace of Chiyoda. Published by Fukuda Hatsujiro, 1897. Calligraphic text in the plate, upper to the center. Inscribed, upper right. Marked with a red seal, lower right. Inscribed and a black seal, lower left. Toyohara Chikanobu, better known to his contemporaries as Yoshu Chikanobu, was a Japanese painter and printmaker who was widely regarded as a prolific woodblock artist during the Meiji epoch.
