Description
Ancient Byzantine, circa 1080 AD, Crusader AE bronze anonymous follis, coin. Turkey origin. Obverse: Bust of Christ facing, wearing nimbus crown, raising hand in benediction and holding book of Gospels. Reverse: Latin cross, with X at center Diameter: 24.7mm, Weight: 4.18g, Condition: About very fine ( VF 20) ) Provenance: London auction house. AE Anonymous Follis, Class I (David Sear #1889). Attributed to Nicephorus III Botaneiates (ruled 1078-1081). Mint of Constantinople. ***From the late 10th to the late 11th century, the Byzantine Empire struck so-called "Anonymous Folles" because instead of containing the portrait of the Byzantine emperor, they contained portraits of Christ. However, it has been possible to deduce which types belong to which emperors, and the anonymous folles are grouped into various "classes" based on which ruler they were struck under.
